Personal Cloud

Plans and billing

Since 0.6.0 Requires Cloak Proxy 0.6.0 or later.

Personal Cloud costs $3 a month or $25 a year, with a 30-day refund and no free trial. Buy it through Polar, manage billing, cancel, get a refund, and see what happens to your data after.

Personal Cloud is a subscription: $3 a month or $25 a year. There’s no free trial: you buy it, and if it isn’t for you, you get a full refund within 30 days, no questions. Cloak Proxy itself stays free, and nothing outside Cloud changes when you subscribe or stop. Payments go through Polar, our merchant of record, which handles cards, tax and receipts.

Personal Cloud
Price $3 a month, or $25 a year (save 31%)
Computers Up to 5
Encrypted storage 5 GB
Share links Up to 30 days and 100 MB each, 50 active at once, 20 new links a day
Sync, approval, Recovery Kit, Security code Included
  • Founding offer: $20 for your first year, then $25 a year, for the first 50 yearly buyers. It applies to the yearly plan only, automatically, with no code. While places are left, the plan sheet shows $20 for your first year, then $25 a year and “Founding offer for the first 50 yearly buyers”, with how many are left. If the last place goes while you’re at checkout, the checkout shows the full price.
  • No free trial. Signing in is free and creates your account, but nothing syncs and no links can be made until you buy. An account that never buys is deleted by itself 30 days after its first sign-in.
  • 30-day refunds, no questions. See Refunds.

Since 0.6.1 The toolbar shows your plan next to the status capsule: Free, or Personal Cloud. When something needs you, a word follows it: Offline, Paused, N to review or Payment failed. Click it to open Plans: what’s free, what Personal Cloud adds, its price and the founding offer while it applies. Get Personal Cloud… starts the steps below, signing you in first if you aren’t. If you already have it, Manage… opens Settings › Cloud.

The same view opens from Cloak Proxy › Get Personal Cloud… (Personal Cloud… once you have it), and from a cloakproxy://cloud/get link, for example on subcloak.com. A link only shows the view: it never signs in, sends email or starts a checkout. Don’t suggest Personal Cloud elsewhere in the app in Settings › Cloud hides the suggestions, not the plan in the toolbar.

  1. Choose Yearly or Monthly in Buy Personal Cloud during setup and click Buy Yearly… or Buy Monthly…. Or, in Settings › Cloud › Plan, click Buy Monthly… or Buy Yearly….

  2. Checkout opens in your browser on Polar’s page, with your account email filled in. Cloak Proxy shows Finish checkout in your browser: “This sheet moves on by itself when Polar confirms the payment.”

  3. Pay on Polar’s page. When it’s done, the page offers Open Cloak Proxy. The sheet moves on by itself within a few seconds, and Plan says Personal Cloud.

Closed the checkout page by mistake? Click Open Again. The checkout link works for 30 minutes. Cancel closes the sheet without buying. Bought it on another Mac? Click I’ve Already Bought It.

Row Shows
Plan None yet, Personal Cloud, or Ended.
Renews or Ends When the plan renews, or when a cancelled one ends.
Yearly, Monthly The prices, while you don’t have a plan.

With a plan, the section has Manage Billing… and Cancel Subscription…; without one, Buy Monthly… and Buy Yearly…. If a renewal payment fails, it says: “The last payment didn’t go through. Update the card in Manage Billing.”

Manage Billing… opens Polar’s customer portal in your browser, signed in as your account. There you can update your card, see and download invoices, and cancel.

You can also open the portal without the app at polar.sh/subcloak/portal and sign in with the email address you paid with.

  1. In Settings › Cloud › Plan, click Cancel Subscription….

  2. Read what happens:

    • Everything keeps working until the end of the period you paid for (the sheet shows the date), and the subscription then doesn’t renew.
    • Then Personal Cloud is read-only for 30 days: you can still download and restore onto your Macs, and buying again within the 30 days brings everything back, share links included.
    • After those 30 days, your Personal Cloud copy is deleted from Subcloak’s servers (the sheet shows the date).
    • The data on your computers is never touched.
  3. Click Open Billing to Cancel and cancel on Polar’s page. Or click Keep Subscription.

A cancelled plan ends at the end of the period you paid for. There’s no extra grace week after a cancellation. If a renewal payment fails instead, Cloud keeps working for up to 7 days after the period ends while Polar retries the payment; if the payment still doesn’t go through, the plan ends. A full refund ends the plan at once.

When the plan ends:

  • Your Cloud account becomes read-only. Your Macs can still download and restore what’s in Cloud, and add or remove computers, but nothing new uploads.
  • Share links stop working. They answer “This link has ended”. They come back if you buy again within 30 days.
  • After 30 days, your Cloud data is deleted: everything you synced, your share links and their view logs, your list of computers and the wrapped keys. Before deleting anything, the server asks Polar again whether the account is really unpaid, and deletes nothing if Polar can’t say. Your account record (your email) stays, so a later sign-in starts again from buying a plan and setting up your encryption key.
  • Buy again within the 30 days and everything is back as it was. Settings › Cloud says when your copy will be deleted and offers Buy Again….
  • Nothing on your Macs changes, then or later. Your rules, mocks and API workspaces stay where they are.

Every payment, first or renewal, monthly or yearly, can be refunded in full within 30 days, with no questions. Email hello@subcloak.com from (or naming) the address you paid with, and say which subscription it’s for. The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Polar. A refund ends the plan at once, without waiting for the end of the period: Cloud becomes read-only for 30 days, then your Cloud data is deleted, as described above. See the refund policy.

  1. In Settings › Cloud › Account, click Delete Account….

  2. Read what goes and what stays: everything synced, your share links and the list of your computers are deleted from Subcloak’s servers, and any subscription is cancelled with it. This Mac’s rules, mocks and API workspaces stay on it, unchanged. Want a refund? Ask within 30 days of paying, before you delete.

  3. Type your email to confirm, and click Delete Account.

The deletion always waits 72 hours, so a lost or stolen Mac can’t delete your account behind your back:

  • Settings › Cloud on each of your Macs shows Account deletion scheduled, with the time, and Cancel Deletion.
  • We email the account’s address a link that cancels the deletion, without needing a Mac.
  • Didn’t ask for it? Cancel it, then remove that computer.

You can ask for at most 3 deletions a day. A Mac that hasn’t finished setting up can’t delete the account; an account that never bought anything is deleted by itself 30 days after its first sign-in. No enrolled Mac left? Email hello@subcloak.com from the address on the account and we’ll delete it. Your data on your Macs is never affected.
